Charcoal Making Course
Westonbirt Arboretum, South Gloucestershire
3rd – 4th September 2016 (NEW date!)
It’s alchemy! Turn timber into pure carbon (a.k.a. lumpwood barbecue charcoal) on this two day (and overnight) course.
Learn to make your own barbecue charcoal from sustainably sourced native British hardwood timber. As examples of both small and large scale production, we’ll be loading and lighting a 7ft ring kiln as well as doing individual burns in 45 gallon oil drums.
We’ll go through all the stages of production – from timber selection and loading a kiln, to lighting it, shutting it down and grading the charcoal.
You’ll also take home a bag of charcoal you’ve made yourself.
We’ll be camping at Westonbirt overnight to keep an eye on the lit kiln, and a simple lunch will be provided on both Saturday and Sunday.
Bring suitable clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty!
Dates: 3rd – 4th September 2016 (with overnight camping)
Tutors: Fiona de Wert & Brian Williamson
